São Tomé and Príncipe is a small island nation in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western coast of Central Africa. Made up of two main islands – São Tomé and Príncipe – it is one of Africa’s smallest countries by both size and population.
A former Portuguese colony, it gained independence in 1975 and remains part of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). Its economy has traditionally relied on cocoa exports, earning it the nickname “Chocolate Island,” alongside fishing and a growing tourism sector drawn by its volcanic landscapes, beaches and biodiversity.
The São Tomé and Príncipe citizenship by investment programme offers an affordable route to a second citizenship through a donation, starting from US$90,000 for a single applicant. No residency or language requirement applies.
